Alytus District SĮ “Simno komunalininkas” records sludge formation at treatment facilities by measuring two main pollutants: organic matter and suspended solids. The amount of decomposing organic matter in wastewater is indicated by biochemical oxygen demand (BDS): the more organic matter wastewater contains, the more oxygen microorganisms need to break it down. This is one of the most important parameters when designing and operating wastewater treatment facilities. Another important wastewater characteristic is suspended solids. The amount of sludge formed at a treatment facility is directly related to the total amount of suspended solids in the wastewater.
