The system is intended to monitor and manage ship traffic in the maritime areas under Lithuania's responsibility, ensure maritime safety and pollution prevention, and enable the timely exchange of data with the networks of the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA). The system is part of the EU SafeSeaNet platform, and the Lithuanian Transport Safety Administration (LTSA) has been designated as the national competent authority responsible for the supervision, administration, and operation of NLESIS.
